ND and MT: Can Highway Improvements Wait 35 Years?

Both the state and federal DOT’s and often elected officials look to the past to determine highway expansion.  This opinion piece shows the importance of vision.  Looking to future and the opportunities that are on the horizon is the point of the article.  It was vision and persistence that got Highway 2 in North Dakota constructed. Now, North Dakota and Montana are faced with similar situations, only this time the future is already proceeding on Highway 85 to the south and Highway 2 to the west.  These are important decisions to the economy, the safety of travelers and the energy security of our nation.  It cannot wait for 35 years!

It took five governors, 35 years and a number of acts of Congress. But the widening of U.S. Highway 2 to Williston, N.D., has to rank among the best-timed public works projects in the history of the state…
